Hello, I’m Emma. I’m the vegetarian.
I’m married to the carnivore. I’m pretty sure one of the reasons he married me was because I fed him well. People often ask me two things, “why are you a vegetarian?” and “a relationship between a vegetarian and a carnivore can never work, can it?”.
I’m a vegetarian because I do not like the taste or texture of meat and fish. Aged 3 I declared that meat was for Daddies and doggies, they were the only two people who I knew that ate meat seen as my mother is also a vegetarian. I then grew up, realised other people ate meat and I met Dan, the carnivore. I think 10 years together is testament that a relationship between a vegetarian and a carnivore can work. I’m still a vegetarian and he’s still a carnivore and together we live and eat happily.
I know a lot of people have different diets for a variety of different reasons so I only ask for one thing when it comes to food, that it is bloody good!
I enjoy cooking and baking, eating out and travelling (basically eating and drinking my way around the world). My Mam (I’ve from the North East so I’ll always say Mam not Mum), always got me in the kitchen as a child, sitting on the work top whilst she prepared dinners with her ‘rafts of veg’. She cooks meat, excellent meat by all accounts, so I started to cook meat as well. It’s a challenge because I can’t taste what I’m cooking but it’s amazing that when you buy quality produce and follow a trusted recipe to the letter what can be created. My love of baking came a little later on, in fact you might call it an obsession. I was given a KitchenAid for my graduation present (Boysenberry for those reading who are secretly asking what colour?) and it has become my best friend in the kitchen. If i go a week without using it, I miss it dearly. In 2012 I started running the Manchester City Centre group of the Clandestine Cake Club so now I get to bake lots of cakes and try even more.
Here I want to share with you my experiences, recipes and general love of food and just maybe answer the questions I often get asked about my life eating with the carnivore.
